1.1     Objectives for English (Language and Literature[1])

Objective A: Analysing

Students should be able to:

  1. identify and explain the content, context, language, structure, technique and style of text(s) and the relationship among texts
  2. identify and explain the effects of the creator’s choices on an audience
  3. justify opinions and ideas, using examples, explanations and terminology
  4. interpret similarities and differences in features within and between genres and texts

 

Objective B: Organising

Students should be able to:

  1. employ organizational structures that serve the context and intention
  2. organize opinions and ideas in a coherent and logical manner
  3. use referencing and formatting tools to create a presentation style suitable to the context and intention

 

Objective C: Producing text

Students should be able to:

  1. produce texts that demonstrate thought, imagination and sensitivity, while exploring and considering new perspectives and ideas arising from personal engagement with the creative process
  2. make stylistic choices in terms of linguistic, literary and visual devices, demonstrating awareness of impact on an audience
  3. select relevant details and examples to develop ideas

Objective D: Using language

Students should be able to:

  1. use appropriate and varied vocabulary, sentence structures and forms of expression
  2. write and speak in an appropriate register and style
  3. use correct grammar, syntax and punctuation
  4. spell (alphabetic languages), write (character languages) and pronounce with accuracy
  5. use appropriate non-verbal communication techniques

Objective A: Comprehending spoken and visual text

Students should be able to:

  1. show understanding of information, main ideas and supporting details, and draw conclusions in familiar and some unfamiliar situations
  2. understand conventions
  • engage with the spoken and visual text by identifying ideas, opinions and attitudes and by making a response to the text based on personal experiences and opinions

 

Objective B: Comprehending written and visual text

Students should be able to:

  1. show understanding of information, main ideas and supporting details, and draw conclusions
  2. understand basic conventions including aspects of format and style, and author’s purpose for writing
  • engage with the written and visual text by identifying ideas, opinions and attitudes and by making a response to the text based on personal experiences and opinions

 

Objective C:  Communicating in response to spoken and/or written and/or visual text

Students should be able to:

  1. respond appropriately to spoken and/or written and/or visual text in a range of familiar and some unfamiliar situations
  2. interact in rehearsed and unrehearsed exchanges on a limited variety of aspects within familiar and some unfamiliar situations
  • express ideas and feelings, and communicate information in familiar and some unfamiliar situations
  1. communicate with a sense of audience and purpose

 

Objective D:  Using language trendy spoken and/or written form

Students should be able to:

  1. write or speak using a range of vocabulary, grammatical structures and conventions; when speaking, use clear pronunciation and intonation
  2. organize information and ideas and use a range of basic cohesive devices
  • use language to suit the context
